What it's for

What can your spirometry diagnose?

Information to understand what your doctor is looking for, without the jargon. This test does not replace the consultation; it complements what your doctor is already evaluating.

01

Airflow obstruction

Measures whether air leaves your lungs at the expected speed. An obstruction may suggest asthma, COPD or other conditions your doctor will evaluate.

Asthma · COPD · Bronchitis
02

Reversibility with bronchodilator

Repeating the test after inhaling salbutamol distinguishes reversible obstruction (typical of asthma) from fixed obstruction (typical of COPD).

Asthma vs COPD distinction
03

Functional severity

Quantifies how much your respiratory function is affected compared to expected values for your age, sex and height.

Mild · Moderate · Severe
04

International reference test

It is the standard test for diagnosing and following up asthma and COPD according to GINA, GOLD and ATS/ERS. The report is valid with any specialist.

Frequently asked

What people ask most before booking

How much does the spirometry with bronchodilator cost?
The regular price is $1,400. Online we have a promotion at $1,200, all included (test + interpretation by a pulmonologist + digital report). Message me on WhatsApp mentioning the promotion to reserve it.
What exactly is included?
It includes baseline spirometry (at least 3 valid maneuvers), administration of inhaled salbutamol, the post-bronchodilator repeat, interpretation by a pulmonologist and a digital report (PDF via WhatsApp or email) the same day. It does not include a medical consultation: it is the test only.
What's the difference between having the spirometry here vs at a large lab?
At most chain labs, the spirometry is performed by a technician and the report is generated by software, without a physician reviewing it. Here Dr. Lara personally interprets every test under ATS/ERS 2019 criteria. We also publish our price up front, with no surprises when you arrive.
How long should I stop my inhalers before the test?

The withdrawal time depends on the type of bronchodilator you use. According to the ATS/ERS 2019 guidelines:

Medication typeStopActive ingredients
SABA (short-acting)4-6 hours beforerescue bronchodilator (SABA: salbutamol)
SAMA (short-acting anticholinergic)12 hours beforeshort-acting anticholinergic (SAMA: ipratropium bromide)
LABA (long-acting)24 hours beforelong-acting bronchodilator (LABA: salmeterol, formoterol), alone or combined with an inhaled corticosteroid
Ultra-LABA (ultra-long-acting)36 hours beforeultra-long-acting bronchodilator (ultra-LABA: indacaterol, olodaterol)
LAMA (long-acting anticholinergic)36-48 hours beforelong-acting anticholinergic (LAMA: tiotropium, glycopyrronium, umeclidinium)
  • Important: inhaled corticosteroids (budesonide, fluticasone, ciclesonide) and leukotriene modifiers (montelukast) should NOT be stopped.
  • If you take combination treatments (LABA+ICS or triple therapy), the withdrawal time is governed by the longest-acting component.
  • Additionally: do not consume coffee, tea, caffeinated soft drinks or smoke in the 4 hours before the test.
  • If you have doubts about your specific medication, message us on WhatsApp with the name and we'll confirm the exact time.
